Medicine Matters

Can I Take Supplements with My Medications?

One of the most common questions we hear at the pharmacy counter is, “I just started this supplement, is it going to interfere with my prescription medication?”

That’s a great question and asking before you start taking a new supplement is one of the smartest things you can do for your health.

The good news is that many vitamins, minerals, and dietary supplements can be taken safely alongside prescription medications. However, there are important exceptions, and some combinations require adjustments in timing or closer monitoring. That’s why it’s always worth checking with your pharmacist before adding something new to your routine.

Why Do Some Supplements Interact with Medications?

Supplements can interact with medications in several different ways. Some may affect how your body absorbs a medication, while others can change how the medication is broken down or how well it works. In some cases, a supplement may increase the risk of side effects or make a medication less effective.

Fortunately, many potential interactions don’t mean you have to stop taking a supplement. Often, the solution is as simple as adjusting when you take each product.

Common Supplement and Medication Interactions

Here are a few examples pharmacists commonly watch for:

Blood Thinners and Certain Supplements

If you take a blood thinner, it’s important to discuss any new supplements with your healthcare team. Products containing vitamin K, fish oil, or high-dose vitamin E may affect blood clotting. That doesn’t always mean you can’t take them, but consistency is important, and your healthcare provider should be aware so your treatment can be monitored appropriately.

Thyroid Medication and Calcium, Magnesium, or Iron

Calcium, magnesium, and iron supplements can reduce the absorption of thyroid medications such as levothyroxine. In many cases, simply separating these products by about four hours allows both to work as intended.

Certain Antibiotics and Minerals or Probiotics

Some antibiotics should not be taken at the same time as calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc because these minerals can reduce how much antibiotic your body absorbs. Probiotics can often be taken safely as well, but they may work best when taken a few hours apart from the antibiotic. Your pharmacist can recommend the best schedule for your specific medication.

Blood Pressure and Heart Medications

Some herbal supplements may affect blood pressure or heart rate. If you’re taking medication to manage your blood pressure or a heart condition, it’s always a good idea to check with your pharmacist before starting a new herbal product or supplement.

Diabetes Medications

Certain supplements may also help lower blood sugar. When combined with diabetes medications, this could increase the risk of blood sugar dropping too low. Your pharmacist can help determine whether any additional monitoring or adjustments are appropriate.

Timing Often Matters More Than You Think

Notice a common theme? The answer is often not “You can’t take that.”

Instead, it may be:

  • Take the products at different times of the day.
  • Leave a few hours between doses.
  • Monitor for specific side effects.
  • Let your healthcare provider know you’re taking the supplement.

Something as simple as changing the timing of your medications and supplements can often prevent an interaction while allowing you to continue benefiting from both.

Why Supplement Quality Matters

Not all supplements are manufactured to the same quality standards. Choosing supplements from a trusted pharmacy helps ensure you’re purchasing products from reputable manufacturers with high-quality ingredients.

An added benefit of purchasing supplements through your pharmacy is access to a pharmacist who can review your medication list, identify potential interactions, and recommend products that fit your individual health needs.

Should I Stop Taking My Supplement If I Start a New Prescription?

Not necessarily. Many supplements can be taken safely with prescription medications. However, it’s always best to check with your pharmacist before combining them. In many situations, the only adjustment needed is changing the timing of when you take each product.
