Today we’re going to talk about Foundayo (Orforglipron), one of the newest medications available for chronic weight management. Unlike many other GLP-1 medications that require injections, Foundayo is a once-daily tablet that can be taken with or without food, making it an attractive option for many patients. It is approved for adults with obesity or adults who are overweight and have at least one weight-related medical condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. Like all weight-loss medications, it works best when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
How Does Foundayo Work?
Foundayo belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by mimicking the effects of the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone, which helps regulate appetite.
Foundayo works by:
- Helping you feel full sooner during meals.
- Reducing feelings of hunger between meals.
- Slowing stomach emptying so you stay satisfied longer.
- Helping reduce overall calorie intake.
While many patients experience meaningful weight loss, results vary from person to person. Healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and taking the medication consistently all play an important role in achieving the best results.
Dosing Schedule
To help reduce stomach-related side effects, Foundayo starts at a low dose and gradually increased over several months.
| Phase | Daily Dose | Typical Duration |
| Month 1 | 0.8 mg | Weeks 1โ4 |
| Month 2 | 2.5 mg | Weeks 5โ8 |
| Month 3 | 5.5 mg | Weeks 9โ12 |
| Month 4 | 9 mg | At least 30 days |
| Month 5 | 14.5 mg | At least 30 days |
| Maintenance | 17.2 mg | Ongoing |
Your healthcare provider may adjust your dose based on how well you’re tolerating the medication and your treatment goals.
Who Should Not Take Foundayo?
Foundayo is not appropriate for everyone.
It should not be used in people with:
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
- A history of a serious allergic reaction to Foundayo or any of its ingredients.
Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about your complete medical history before starting treatment.
Common Side Effects
Like many GLP-1 medications, the most common side effects involve the digestive system.
These may include:
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Indigestion (dyspepsia)
The good news is that these side effects are often mild and tend to improve as your body adjusts to each dose increase.
Eating smaller meals, avoiding high-fat foods, and staying well hydrated may also help minimize stomach discomfort.
When Should You Contact Your Healthcare Provider?
Contact your healthcare provider promptly if you experience:
- Persistent vomiting that prevents you from keeping fluids down.
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain.
- Signs of dehydration.
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash.
If you ever feel uncertain about a symptom, don’t hesitate to call your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Foundayo should be discontinued if pregnancy occurs. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding because it may pass into breast milk and could affect a nursing infant.
What If You Miss a Dose?
If you miss a dose, follow the directions provided with your prescription or contact your pharmacist for guidance. Don’t double your next dose unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider.
