For some patients, our pharmacists recommend alternating between Zyrtec and Allegra on a monthly basis during allergy season.

For example:

Month 1: Zyrtec
Month 2: Allegra
Month 3: Zyrtec
Month 4: Allegra

Why switch?

People can respond differently to antihistamines, and sometimes one medicine may seem to work better than another over time. Alternating monthly gives patients a simple routine while allowing them to see which option gives them the best symptom relief with the fewest side effects.

What’s the difference?

Zyrtec (cetirizine)
Zyrtec works well for many allergy sufferers, but it can cause some drowsiness in certain people.

Allegra (fexofenadine)
Allegra is generally less sedating, making it a popular option for people who want daytime allergy relief without feeling sleepy.

Quick Allegra tip: Take it with water rather than fruit juice, since certain juices can decrease how much of the medicine your body absorbs.

Does everyone need to alternate?

Not necessarily. Some people do perfectly well staying on one antihistamine throughout allergy season.

The goal is finding a routine that works well for your symptoms, your schedule, and your body. And remember- alternating monthly means taking one antihistamine at a time, not taking Zyrtec and Allegra together unless your healthcare provider specifically recommends it.
