Summer Health Tips: Stay Ahead of the Heat

Every season asks something a little different of your body. Summer’s biggest challenges are heat, sun exposure, travel, and staying active. Fortunately, a few small adjustments to your daily routine can help you stay energized, protect your health, and enjoy everything the season has to offer.

Hydration Is More Than Just Water

When you sweat, your body loses more than water. It also loses important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium that help regulate muscle function, hydration, and nerve signaling.

That’s why you can drink plenty of water and still feel tired, sluggish, or experience muscle cramps after spending time in the heat.

If you’re working outdoors, exercising, spending the day at the lake, or simply sweating more than usual, replacing electrolytes along with fluids can help your body recover more effectively. Water should always be your first priority, but electrolyte replacement may be beneficial during prolonged activity or excessive sweating.

Watch How Heat and Your Medications Mix

Many people don’t realize that some medications can affect how the body responds to heat.

Certain blood pressure medications, diuretics (“water pills”), antihistamines, stimulant medications, and other prescriptions may increase your risk of dehydration or make it more difficult for your body to regulate temperature.

This isn’t a reason to stop taking your medication. Instead, it’s a reminder to be more intentional about staying hydrated, taking breaks in the shade, and avoiding prolonged heat exposure when possible.

If you’re unsure whether one of your medications requires extra precautions during the summer months, ask your pharmacist. We’re happy to review your medications and answer your questions.

Protect Your Medications from the Heat

Summer heat doesn’t just affect people—it can also affect medications.

Leaving prescriptions in a hot vehicle, direct sunlight, or humid environments can reduce their effectiveness. A car’s interior can quickly reach temperatures well above 100°F on a sunny day, even if it’s only parked for a short time.

Whenever possible:

  • Store medications in a cool, dry place.
  • Avoid keeping prescriptions in the bathroom, where humidity is high.
  • Never leave medications in a parked vehicle.
  • If you’re traveling with medications that require temperature control, use an insulated travel bag or cooler as recommended.

Sun Protection Is an Everyday Habit

Sun protection isn’t just for beach vacations. Most of our sun exposure happens during everyday activities—walking to the mailbox, running errands, working outside, or driving.

Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher each morning is one of the simplest ways to protect your skin. Remember to reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors, and again after swimming or heavy sweating.

Wearing sunglasses, lightweight protective clothing, and seeking shade during the hottest part of the day can provide additional protection.

Support Your Body Through the Season

Summer often means more travel, longer days, increased activity, and sometimes less sleep. Those extra demands can leave your body feeling run down.

Healthy habits like eating balanced meals, getting enough rest, and staying hydrated should always come first. For some people, magnesium may help support normal muscle function and relaxation, while an electrolyte supplement can help replace minerals lost through heavy sweating. Our pharmacists can help you determine whether these products may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Don’t Ignore Heat Exhaustion

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially during periods of high temperatures and humidity.

Watch for warning signs such as:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Weakness or unusual fatigue

If these symptoms occur, move to a cool location, drink fluids if you’re able, and rest. If symptoms worsen or someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a high body temperature, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Can Hot Weather Affect My Medications?

Yes. Heat can affect both how medications are stored and how your body responds to certain prescriptions. Some medications increase sensitivity to heat or sunlight, while others can increase your risk of dehydration. If you’re unsure whether your medications require special precautions during the summer, your pharmacist can help you understand what to watch for.

Enjoy Summer Safely

Summer is meant to be enjoyed. By staying hydrated, protecting your medications from extreme temperatures, practicing good sun safety, and recognizing the early signs of heat illness, you can spend more time making memories and less time worrying about the heat.

If you have questions about staying hydrated, choosing an electrolyte supplement, storing your medications during travel, or whether one of your prescriptions may increase your sensitivity to heat or sunlight, stop by Jones Drug. Our pharmacists are always happy to help you stay healthy and enjoy a safe, active summer.
