Medicine Matters

What Is Medication Adherence and Why Does It Matter?

Have you ever forgotten to take your medication or wonder whether missing a dose really matters? You’re definitely not the only one. Staying on track with your medications can be challenging, but it’s one of the most important things you can do for your health.

Medication adherence simply means taking your medications exactly as your healthcare provider prescribed. The right dose, at the right time, for as long as directed. It may sound simple but taking your medication as prescribed helps ensure it works as intended and gives you the best chance of managing your health successfully. Your pharmacist is also one of your best resources for answering questions and helping you stay on track with your medications.

Why does medication adherence matter? Medications are designed to work best when they’re taken consistently. Skipping doses, stopping a medication too soon, or taking it differently than prescribed can reduce its effectiveness and, in some cases, allow your condition to worsen without you even noticing.

Many prescription medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, high cholesterol, and other chronic conditions only work as intended when they’re taken regularly. Missing doses of blood pressure medication, for example, can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke over time. Stopping an antibiotic early because you feel better may allow the infection to return and can contribute to antibiotic resistance.

The good news is that you don’t have to be perfect, just consistent. Building a routine, using a pill organizer, setting reminders on your phone, or pairing your medication with another daily habit can make staying on track much easier. Many pharmacies, including Jones Drug Store, also offers a Prescription Synchronization program, allowing your maintenance medications to be refilled on the same day each month so you can make fewer trips to the pharmacy and simplify your routine.

If you’re having trouble remembering your medications, don’t like the way one makes you feel, are worried about the cost, or simply have questions, talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider. Don’t stop taking a medication on your own. There are often simple solutions, such as adjusting the timing, finding a more affordable option, managing side effects, or working with your provider to find a medication that’s a better fit.

At Jones Drug Store, we’re more than just the place where you pick up your prescriptions.
